Recent NBA Trading Card Releases

The 2013-14 NBA season is well underway and slowly approaching the All-Star Break, this year being held in New Orleans. Since our last newsletter, only 3 new products have hit the shelves in the form of 2013-14 Panini Prizm Basketball, 2013-14 Panini Pinnacle Basketball and 2013-14 Panini Elite Basketball.

2013-14 Panini Prizm Basketball has been well received by the collecting community due to the technology used to create aesthetically-pleasing card designs. Another reason is the low-numbered Gold Prizm Parallels. These reaped some lucky sellers last year thousands of dollars per card. This season’s release also introduces the 1 of 1 Black Prizm parallel cards. Each hobby box contains 20 packs with 6 cards per pack. These are popular for set collectors and hit chasers alike, with each hobby box yielding 2 autographs and 5 Prizms.

2013-14 Panini Pinnacle Basketball is a new line for Panini, with each hobby box comprising 10 packs, with 30 cards per pack. Each hobby box contains 2 autograph cards and 1 memorabilia card. This should be popular with set collectors with a sizeable 300-card base set, 3 autograph sets and 2 memorabilia sets. The line also reintroduces some popular 1990’s inserts as well as incorporating Nufex technology.

The latest release for 2014 has been 2013-14 Panini Elite Basketball. Each hobby box contains 20 packs with 5 cards per pack. On average, each contains 2 autographs, 2 memorabilia cards and 2 rookie cards. Chase sets include Passing the Torch Signatures, New Breed, Franchise Future, Face 2 Face, Elite Signatures and Black Status Parallels.

Upcoming NBA Trading Card Releases

The 2013-14 edition of Panini Gold Standard is set to be released on 19 February 2014. This popular set contains only 1 pack per box, but with 10 cards per pack. On average, each hobby box will yield 4 autographs and 1 memorabilia card. This product is popular with set collectors as it has a 275 card base set with 25 variations. It is also a hit with the general NBA collecting scene as it contains autographs of the latest rookies and veterans, as well as the Solid Gold and Bullion Brand Logos, which are numbered to 1 and 2 respectively for each card. The Solid Gold cards are 1 of 1 and are printed on 14 karat gold. Bullion Brand Logos each contain memorabilia and are serially numbered to 2 each.

 Welcome

Hello, and welcome again to the monthly newsletter for local Australian NBA Basketball trading card collectors, NBA Trading Card Collectors Corner. This publication is free to all and proudly presented by your only place for NBA Basketball Hobby boxes, packs and supplies, DGCollectables.

Collectormania – Sunday 23 March 2014

For those of you in Sydney, the last Collectormania for 2013 was on 27 October 2013. This was a successful event with a good turnout of casual and hardcore card collectors. The next one is next year on Sunday 23 March 2014 starting at 9am and finishing at 3pm. This is a place where collectors can meet in person, trade and purchase NBA hobby boxes, packs and supplies. DGCollectables along with other sports and non-sports collectors/dealers will be actively participating at this upcoming show.

The next one is to be held on Sunday 23 March 2014 at Penrith Exhibition Marquee. This venue is situated in Sydney’s west at Mulgoa Road, Penrith NSW 2750. Public transport is available from Penrith Train Station, which is positioned only a short drive to the venue. There is also plenty of free onsite parking. This promises to be a collector’s delight. We hope to see you there and remember to bring along your trade lists and trade bait.

Recent NBA Trading Card Releases

The 2013-14 NBA season began just a few days again, however, there have not been any new 2013-14 hobby product released to date. Panini over the last 2 months has released almost the last of its 2012-13 NBA product.

2012-13 Panini Flawless was released in October and was well received by the collecting community. Collectors’ appetite for high end cardboard has not abated, with box breakers busting cases upon cases. This has flowed onto the secondary market with strong prices achieved for base cards up to the premium autograph and patch cards. Panini ensured pent up demand for the product with a major marketing campaign as well as pushing back the release date to November 2013 for 2012-13 Panini Immaculate, their last 2012-13 NBA trading card set release.

Even without a licence to produce NBA trading cards, Upper Deck hasn’t been totally off the radar and recently released the 2013 Upper Deck The University of Kansas set. As the name suggests, this is a set focusing purely on the Kansas Jayhawks College Basketball team. Each hobby box comprises 24 packs, with 8 cards in each pack. Each box will contain on average an autograph card and two Special Light F/X Kansas Icons inserts. With alumni including Paul Pierce, Danny Manning, Kirk Hinrich and Mario Chalmers, the set should be relatively popular, following on from last year’s The University of North Carolina set release from Upper Deck.

Upcoming NBA Trading Card Releases

Panini is planning to release one more 2012-13 NBA basketball trading card set this year, being the high end 2012-13 Panini Immaculate.

2012-13 Panini Immaculate is a new high end product releasing on 13 November 2013. Each box will contain 1 auto rookie patch numbered 99 or less, 1 autograph or auto patch card, 1 memorabilia card, 1 additional memorabilia or autograph card, 1 regular card numbered to 99 and 1 additional card. Initial release photos of some of the cards in the set by Panini have had collectors talking with the first ever offering of six NBA Logoman booklet cards all numbered 1-of-1 as well as player worn hat cards. It was thought that high end basketball sets with licensed NBA players was confined to the relatively recent release of 2012-13 Panini National Treasures, however, Panini are looking to supplement this with a set very reminiscent of Upper Deck Ultimate Collection from years gone past.

Not to be outdone, Upper Deck is visiting its past and releasing 2012-13 Upper Deck Exquisite. This is planned to be released on 19 November 2013. As most collectors know, the Exquisite brand has been in basketball since the 2003-04 season, and has been extremely successful in defining high end collecting in the hobby. Since Upper Deck’s loss of the NBA trading card licence at the beginning of the 2009-10 NBA season, there has only been one Exquisite basketball release, which was for the 2011-12 season. This was not as popular as previous seasons, due to the lack of Logoman cards, collegiate uniforms as well as the inclusion of unnumbered Shadowbox autograph cards, which generally appeared once per box, on average. Upper Deck are attempting to revive the set through having an average of 5 hard signed autographs per box, the introduction of Super Tins as well as having the chase of the Exquisite 16, a rare trading card featuring 16 hard signed autographs. It will be interesting to see how this is received by collectors this time around.

In terms of new 2013-14 NBA trading card sets, it appears that 2013-14 Panini Prestige will be the first one released on 6 November 2013. Each hobby box will contain 24 packs with 8 cards per pack. On average, each hobby box will contain two autographs, two memorabilia cards, two bonus Shots Silver, and 18 other inserts. This will be collectors’ first opportunity to get their hands on rookie cards from the 2013 rookie class, including players such as Anthony Bennett, Nerlens Noel, Tim Hardaway Junior, Michael Carter Williams and others.

Recent NBA Trading Card Releases

As touched on in the previous issue, Panini continues to release 2012-13 products, even with the 2013-14 season only a few months away. In the month of September, Panini Innovation and Panini Intrigue were released.

2012-13 Panini Innovation is a mid-range product and on average, each hobby box will contain three autograph or memorabilia cards as well as One Rookie View Rookie Card. There is a 200-card base set consisting of 100 base cards, 25 View cards, and 75 Rookie View cards.

2012-13 Panini Intrigue is also a mid to higher end product with 1 pack per box, 6 cards per pack as well as 1 five-card Intriguing Pack. Each hobby box, on average comprises three autographs and one memorabilia card. The Intriguing Player Packs feature only the game’s 20 top players, with ten different versions of each to deliver diversity, the thrill of the chase and maximum value. There are a total of 200 cards in this unique Intriguing player checklist. Each card utilises state-of-the-art technology with custom foil etches for 3D feel.

Upcoming NBA Trading Card Releases

Panini is planning to release more 2012-13 NBA basketball trading card sets this year focusing on high end collectors including 2012-13 Panini Flawless and 2012-13 Panini Immaculate.

2012-13 Panini Flawless will be live 9 October 2013 and each hobby box comprises 7 autographs, 2 jumbo patches and 1 base card. Every base card is numbered to 20 and has a real piece of diamond in it. Emerald base card parallels are numbered to 5 with a real piece of emerald in it. Every autograph is numbered to 25 or less. In this set, Panini worked out a deal with Leaf to have the only on-card Damian Lillard RC Autographs in an NBA uniform. This is a new super high end product and caters for those collectors seeking autographs and patches of only the superstars of today’s game. Previous high end sets such as Upper Deck Exquisite and Panini National Treasures have been popular with demand exceeding supply, however, have not carried such a hefty price tag that Panini Flawless does, so it will be interesting to see how this product is accepted by collectors. If this product does not meet expectations, expect significant price drops in boxes and cases a few weeks after the release date.

2012-13 Panini Immaculate is a new high end product releasing on 30 October 2013. This should be well received by collectors based on initial feedback to Panini.

Recent NBA Trading Card Releases

Even with the conclusion of the 2013 NBA Finals, Panini and Upper Deck continue to release new 2012-13 basketball trading card products. Both trading card companies are taking full advantage of the double rookie class of 2011 and 2012 headlined by Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Harrison Barnes, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Bradley Beal and Ricky Rubio to promote their latest releases. As Panini currently have the sole NBA trading card licence, they have dominated the NBA trading card landscape with the lion’s share of 2012-13 releases headlined by their recently released flagship, National Treasures. Upper Deck do, however, have the licence for US Collegiate trading card products and have released a handful of sets including 2012-13 Upper Deck Fleer Retro.

Panini has recently released 2012-13 Panini Signatures as well as 2012-13 Panini National Treasures.

2012-13 Panini Signatures is a mid-ranged product aimed at the autograph collecting crowd with a 1 pack per box and 4 cards per pack breakdown. Each box, on average, contains 3 autographs and 1 insert. The set has a 200 autograph card checklist and boasts the debut of the well-received autographed film cards.

2012-13 Panini National Treasures is the high-end product for NBA trading cards and has been a runaway success with scores of box and case breaks ever since its release during the week of the 2013 National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago, USA. Each hobby box comprises only 1 pack with 10 cards per pack. There are 9 autographs, memorabilia cards or press plates per box on average. The most sought after inserts cards have been the rookie patch autographs of the top 2011 and 2012 rookies, as well as single and dual logoman cards of today’s superstars and past legends. The secondary market for the most sought after insert cards has been strong, with demand far exceeding supply for rookie patch autographs of Kyrie Irving as well as logoman cards of Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Karl Malone, John Stockton and Kevin Durant.

2012-13 Upper Deck Fleer Retro was recently released and is Upper Deck’s high end product in the basketball trading card scene. Each hobby box contains 2 mini-boxes, with 10 packs per mini-box and 5 cards per pack. These are aimed at 1990’s basketball trading card collectors with the majority of inserts in this set borrowing heavily from cards of that era. The most sought after inserts from this set are Precious Metal Gems serially numbered to 50 and 100 based on the 1997-98 Metal Universe set. As with Upper Deck products, they are the only place to get autographed LeBron James and Michael Jordan inserts.

2012-13 Upper Deck SP Authentic was released in late May 2013 and is one of Upper Deck’s most popular basketball trading card products. This hobby product is good for set collectors and autograph/patch insert collectors alike. Each hobby box comprises 24 packs with 5 cards per pack. On average, each hobby box will yield 3 autograph or memorabilia cards. As usual, the most sought after cards from this release include the Upper Deck-exclusive Michael Jordan and LeBron James autographed cards.

Upcoming NBA Trading Card Releases

Panini has a handful of new 2012-13 NBA basketball trading card sets, which they are releasing in August and September. They include 2012-13 Panini Elite Series, 2012-13 Panini Innovation and 2012-13 Panini Intrigue.

2012-13 Panini Elite Series will be live 21 August 2013 and each hobby box comprises 1 pack with 10 cards per pack. Each hobby box will contain 4 autograph cards as well as an Elite Glass Card. This is a mid to higher end product and caters for those collectors seeking autographs, memorabilia and other hits as opposed to base cards for set collectors.

2012-13 Panini Innovation is a mid-range product and will be live 4 September 2013. Each hobby box consists of 1 pack and 8 cards per pack. On average, each hobby box will contain three autograph or memorabilia cards as well as One Rookie View Rookie Card.
